The French couture house Christian Dior has named Raf Simons as the new creative director for the label.  Mr. Simons is taking over for John Galliano who was fired a year ago for anti-Semitic remarks.

Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons may not be all that well-known to the average consumer, he's worshipped by fashion industry insiders and considered by many in the business to be the top menswear designer working today.  In 2005 he was named creative director for the Jil Sander label for which he is credited as having saved from going out of business.  Mr. Simmons will focus on the women’s collection while the designer Kris van Assche will continue to head up men’s wear.
